On Tuesday, January 7, a severe flood struck Saudi Arabia, submerging the city of Mecca and sweeping cars off roads with powerful water currents.
The flooding was triggered by a heavy rainstorm that primarily impacted the holy cities of Mecca, Madinah, and Jeddah, according to media reports. Photos and videos circulating on social media depict streets transformed into rivers, with cars nearly submerged and being carried away by the force of the water. Many residents have been forced to evacuate or seek refuge in safer areas.
Saudi Arabia’s Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mecca, Madinah, and Jeddah, warning that the rainfall is expected to persist until January 10.
The severe weather has also disrupted operations at Jeddah’s airport, leading to delays. Passengers are being urged to monitor flight updates before heading to the airport.

The epicenter was located 181 km north of the Indian city of Darjeeling and 87 km northeast of Mount Everest. The earthquake has caused substantial damage across the affected areas.
