A new analysis of acne creams and cleansers has revealed that dozens of products, including popular brands like Proactiv and Clearasil, contain elevated levels of a cancer-linked chemical.
These findings corroborate parts of a previous study that had faced criticism over its methodology, increasing pressure on the US Food and Drug Administration to intervene on products widely used by American teens.
Researchers examined over 100 benzoyl peroxide-based acne treatments sold at major retailers across six states and discovered that roughly one-third were contaminated with significant levels of benzene, a known carcinogen.
