A family in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, has accused a nurse of causing their newborn's death by withholding the baby until a payment of ₹5,100 was made, leading to a critical delay in care.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. RC Gupta confirmed the family’s claim that the nurse refused to release the baby, despite their repeated pleas, ultimately resulting in the child's death.
"The family members claimed they repeatedly pleaded with the nurse to give them the baby, but she refused, resulting in the infant's death," the official stated.
Family alleges nurse placed baby on table over payment dispute
Sujit Kumar, from Anoha Patara in Karhal, filed a complaint with local authorities and the state government, stating that his wife, Sanjali, was admitted to Karhal's CHC hospital on September 18. Sujit alleged that after his wife gave birth to a healthy boy on September 19, nurse Jyoti mishandled the situation.
Sujit claimed the nurse demanded ₹5,100 after the delivery. When the family couldn’t immediately pay, the nurse allegedly placed the baby on a table and refused to hand it over. After a 40-minute delay, Sujit paid the amount, but by then the baby’s condition had worsened.
Sujit notified the staff, and the baby was transferred to Saifai Medical College for emergency treatment but died shortly after arrival. Doctors attributed the death to inadequate care during labor.
A formal complaint has been filed, and the CMO has set up a three-member committee to investigate the incident, with results expected in three days. Nurse Jyoti has been transferred to ensure a fair investigation.
