An Oxford University study found that women, on average, have five close friends but often lose two of these connections when entering a new romantic relationship. The change is attributed to reduced time for social interactions and shifting emotional priorities.

However, this loss is frequently balanced by forming a new friendship, often through their partner’s social circle. Professor Robin Dunbar, who led the study, explains that the intense focus and emotional investment a new relationship demands can naturally lead to a reorganization of social bonds, with some friendships fading into the background.

Dunbar also highlighted that this social reshuffling is part of a broader phenomenon in human relationships, where maintaining strong emotional connections requires consistent time and effort. As romantic relationships demand significant attention, they often take precedence over platonic friendships, which may unintentionally weaken.

The study underscores the dynamic nature of friendships, emphasizing the importance of communication and effort in preserving close connections during significant life changes.
